She Writes Press Author Panel

The Book Catapult will be hosting three authors from indie publisher She Writes Press on Wednesday, July 11 at 7pm. Jill Hall (The Silver Shoes), Bella Mahaya Carter (Raw: My Journey From Anxiety to Joy), and Laurie Buchanan (The Business of Being: Soul Purpose in and Out of the Workplace) will each discuss and sign their books.

About The Silver Shoes by Jill Hall: In her second novel, Jill G. Hall, author of The Black Velvet Coat, brings readers another dual tale of two dynamic women from two very different eras searching for fulfillment. San Francisco artist Anne McFarland has been distracted by a cross-country romance with sexy Sergio and has veered from her creative path. While visiting him in New York, she buys a pair of rhinestone shoes in an antique shop that spark her imagination and lead her on a quest to learn more about the shoes’ original owner. Almost ninety years earlier, Clair Deveraux, a sheltered 1929 New York debutante, tries to reside within the bounds of polite society and please her father. But when she meets Winnie, a carefree Macy’s shop girl, Clair is lured into the steamy side of Manhattan - a place filled with speakeasies, flappers, and the beat of “that devil music” - and her true desires explode wide open. Secrets and lies heap up until her father loses everything in the stock market crash and Clair becomes entangled in the burlesque world in an effort to save her family and herself. Ultimately, both Anne and Clair - two very different women living in very different eras - attain true fulfillment... with some help from their silver shoes.

About Raw by Bella Mahaya Carter: When Bella Mahaya Carter adopted a raw, vegan diet to heal her chronic stomach problems, she never could have predicted what a challenging yet revolutionary journey it would send her on - one that would ultimately heal her body, mend her mind, and awaken her spirit. Raw is the story of one woman’s quest for health and happiness, which dragged her kicking and screaming into spiritual adulthood. Anxiety and a desire to heal it holistically - even before she knew what it was - is at the heart of this story, which reveals Carter’s struggles to face her fears, release perfectionism, surrender things beyond her control, and find validation within for her life and work. The book is divided into three sections - body, mind, and spirit - and it begins with Carter’s efforts to holistically cure chronic stomach problems. Toward that end, she adopted a 100 percent raw, vegan diet, which eased her symptoms and produced impressive, unexpected perks, but didn’t completely heal her. She then looked to her mind for answers and discovered that unconscious negative thoughts combined with a stressful, hectic-paced life sabotaged her well-being. Finally, a few mystical experiences brought her “home” to a visceral understanding of who she really is.

About The Business of Being by Laurie Buchanan: Blending business and spirituality, The Business of Being demonstrates how to stand in alignment with your core values; it explores how to thrive, soul-side out, in and out of the workplace. This book isn’t just about being in business; it’s about the business of being. But when you stop to think about it, each of us is like a small business. Successful business owners implement strategies that improve their prospects for success. Similarly, as human beings, it serves us well to implement guiding principles that inspire us to live our purpose and reach our goals. The rich ganache filling that flows through the center of this book is the story of La Mandarine Bleue, a delicious depiction of how nine individuals used twelve steps of a business plan to find their vocation and undergo a transformation (with some French recipes thrown in for good measure). From a business plan and metrics to mission and goals with everything between - investors, clients and customers, marketing strategies, and goodwill development - this book clearly maps how to create personal transformation at the intersection of business and spirituality. Merging the language of business and self-help, The Business of Being will teach you how to enhance “profitability” - body, mind, and spirit.
