Independent Bookstore Day 2018

The Book Catapult is super excited to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 28th! IBD is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April. In addition to all sorts on in-store events (see ours below), there are exclusive books and literary items that you can only get on that day from local, independent brick-and-mortar bookstores. Not before. Not after. Not online.

Why are we celebrating independent bookstores?

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent. In a world of tweets and algorithms and pageless digital downloads, bookstores are not a dying anachronism.  They are living, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact, there are more of them this year than there were last year. And they are at your service.

The Book Catapult will be hosting storyteller Marilyn McPhie, who will be reading & storytelling for the youngsters at 10:30am.

Then at 11:30, we will host an NEA Big Read with the folks from Write Out Loud who will be reading from 2018 selection Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link. (The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. Presented in San Diego by Write Out Loud in partnership with San Diego Public Library.)

And at 2:00, local author and veterinarian Suzy Fincham-Gray will be here for an informal "Ask the Vet" session plus origami animal bookmarks! Suzy is a vet at B Street Veterinary Hospital in Golden Hill and her new book is My Patients and Other Animals.

We will also have literary trivia with book prizes (of course) plus lots more! 

PLUS the Catapult will also be a proud participating store in the 2nd annual Independent Bookstore Day Book Crawl! This year, NINE San Diego-area independent bookstores are part of the bookstore crawl - pick up your passport in any of the nine locations & get it stamped with a purchase on April 28th, 29th, or 30th.
