About the Author

Mattie Griffis Whitaker was born and raised in Auburn, North Carolina in 1930. She graduated from Garner Consolidated High School and Starks Beauty College, Person Street, Raleigh, NC, in 1948-49. She was married for 56 years to the late Gorum W. Whitaker and raised four loving children. Mattie loves her seven grandchildren, and great grandchild with a passion and is loved in return by their constant desire to visit "Grandma's or Nana's house". She has maintained a lifelong career as a beautician/cosmetologist for almost 70 years and still takes weekly appointments to service her long-time customers. She is designated as Mother of the Church for Rand Street Christian Church, Garner, NC, and is active in several local Community Clubs. She attends Sunday School, enjoys attending bible studies and worship services, and supports local Pastors around the community. Mattie is a faithful supporter of bereaved families by attending homegoing celebrations and preparing her delicious food to comfort them. She is an avid watcher of good television preaching and singing and loves talking on the phone and checking in with family and friends. Another one of her favorite pastimes is sitting in the den around the fireplace with her Word Search puzzle books and watching day and night-time soap operas. To the faithfulness and glory of God, Mattie is a five-year cancer survivor! Always surrounded by loving family, friends and 'adopted children and grandchildren', Mattie lives a fulfilled life.
